Summary

Merciless。 Relentless。 Unstoppable。

The first intelligent species to encounter mankind attacked without warning。 Merciless。 Relentless。 Unstoppable。 With little hope of halting the invasion, Earth's last roll of the dice was to dispatch three colony ships, seeds of Earth, to different parts of the galaxy。 The human race would live on 。 。 。 somewhere。

150 years later, the planet Darien hosts a thriving human settlement, which enjoys a peaceful relationship with an indigenous race, the scholarly Uvovo。 But there are secrets buried on Darien's forest moon。 Secrets that go back to an apocalyptic battle fought between ancient races at the dawn of galactic civilization。 Unknown to its colonists, Darien is about to become the focus of an intergalactic power struggle where the true stakes are beyond their comprehension。 And what choices will the Uvovo make when their true nature is revealed and the skies grow dark with the enemy?

This book has some interesting ideas and a decent plot but the execution is pretty sloppy。Firstly there is far too much going on。 There is far too many pov characters and a new alien species or made up word is throwing at you almost every page。The majority of the pov characters are one dimensional and have little to no characterisation。Despite these large draw backs I stuck with it and still enjoyed reading and will probably get round to reading the other books in the series to see how the story This book has some interesting ideas and a decent plot but the execution is pretty sloppy。Firstly there is far too much going on。 There is far too many pov characters and a new alien species or made up word is throwing at you almost every page。The majority of the pov characters are one dimensional and have little to no characterisation。Despite these large draw backs I stuck with it and still enjoyed reading and will probably get round to reading the other books in the series to see how the story unfolds。 。。。more

Lot of thought and effort went into the setting。 But I feel like a lot of the story moves forward just because of the 'sci fi' theme。 I didn't feel particularly attached to the characters, as they didn't present any internal conflicts that could have been showcased。Sure, these kind of stories of 'sci fi stuff happens' don't work well for me in writing, they are much better presented in movies/videos where the scale of planets/ships can be showcased。 Books rather highlight character motivation, i Lot of thought and effort went into the setting。 But I feel like a lot of the story moves forward just because of the 'sci fi' theme。 I didn't feel particularly attached to the characters, as they didn't present any internal conflicts that could have been showcased。Sure, these kind of stories of 'sci fi stuff happens' don't work well for me in writing, they are much better presented in movies/videos where the scale of planets/ships can be showcased。 Books rather highlight character motivation, intricacies etc etc, and I felt that lacking。 But hey, just my opinion。 。。。more

Wow! There's a lot going on here and, being honest, I lost track of some of who was who, who was allied to who and, perhaps, who the bad guts were because of all the twists, turns and politicking。 Initially, the book reminded me of The Saga Of The Seven Suns - a fully populated universe, the sometime forest setting, the hint of an ancient evil。 But it feels like the author is trying to make this series more "adult" (for want of a better word), more dark。 I'm not sure he succeeded。Some of the dia Wow! Who speaks like that?Perhaps the biggest thing that bothered me, though。。。 could a fully-functioning human colony be set up, right up to having pool tables, in just 150 years? 。。。more

Overall I enjoyed this book, however a lot of the dialogue and character interactions are clunky and disjointed, but the characters themselves are well developed and engaging。 What makes this book is the sheer scope and imagination of the storyline, which fascinated and delighted me in equal measure。 I will definitely be reading the next one。

A fun space opera with a few interesting characters, but overall not particularly deep or groundbreaking。 I'd like to know more about all the different aliens, but I did like the Uvovo, especially the main one we get to know。 I liked the story of the guy trying to go through the galaxy to the planet where most of the other characters are。 The only really interesting Big Ideas have to do with the alien archaeology stuff, but maybe that pays off more in the sequels。 I do like a space opera in whic A fun space opera with a few interesting characters, but overall not particularly deep or groundbreaking。 I'd like to know more about all the different aliens, but I did like the Uvovo, especially the main one we get to know。 I liked the story of the guy trying to go through the galaxy to the planet where most of the other characters are。 The only really interesting Big Ideas have to do with the alien archaeology stuff, but maybe that pays off more in the sequels。 I do like a space opera in which humans are very minor players in the grand scheme of things。 I might pick up the sequel sometime。See a slightly longer version of this review on my blog: https://examinedworlds。blogspot。com/2。。。 。。。more

I picked up this series because I was quite intrigued by the description of the first book - 3 colony ships are sent out from earth to escape a devastating attack and so that humanity can continue on and establish a foothold somewhere else in the galaxy。 Sounded really intriguing。 Unfortunately this plot line quickly became rather minor as the plot expanded and expanded to become grander and grander and to include more elements, more species, civilizations and characters。 I think for me, I event I picked up this series because I was quite intrigued by the description of the first book - 3 colony ships are sent out from earth to escape a devastating attack and so that humanity can continue on and establish a foothold somewhere else in the galaxy。 Sounded really intriguing。 Unfortunately this plot line quickly became rather minor as the plot expanded and expanded to become grander and grander and to include more elements, more species, civilizations and characters。 I think for me, I eventually started losing interest in most of the major plots - they just started becoming a little to surreal。 Also meant that less time could be spent really developing that initial plot line and the characters involved in it。 At the end of the day, the bits of the book that interested me most were still the bits hinted at by the original description of the trilogy 。。。 the tale of those 3 earth colony ships。 If the book had kept to this with a bit of Sendrukan intrigue to spice up the plot, I would have enjoyed the book a lot more。 。。。more

Pretty awful from start to finish。 Cliche heavy and the poor stereotyping made it an absolute drag。 Didn't really connect with any of the characters。 I like the overall concept of the novel/series, the scope and potential of the universe, but I don't think I'll be reading the second book。 Pretty awful from start to finish。 Cliche heavy and the poor stereotyping made it an absolute drag。 Didn't really connect with any of the characters。 I like the overall concept of the novel/series, the scope and potential of the universe, but I don't think I'll be reading the second book。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this novel。 It’s a great start to a series。 This is a space opera that follows a lost human colony of 150 years that is discovered by Earth。 Aliens attacked humankind without any warning。 In the hope of halting the invasion, Earth dispatched three ships, “seeds of earth” to different parts of the galaxy。 Humans have since settled on planet Darien where they live in harmony with an alien species called the Uvovo, a race with symbiotic ties to Earth。 When the threat of a new enemy I really enjoyed this novel。 It’s a great start to a series。 This is a space opera that follows a lost human colony of 150 years that is discovered by Earth。 Aliens attacked humankind without any warning。 In the hope of halting the invasion, Earth dispatched three ships, “seeds of earth” to different parts of the galaxy。 Humans have since settled on planet Darien where they live in harmony with an alien species called the Uvovo, a race with symbiotic ties to Earth。 When the threat of a new enemy arises, a war could erupt across the entire galaxy。There is strong world building and characters。 The story is told through the points of view of many characters。 I liked getting to know each of them and their backstories。 I liked how Darien was against artificial intelligence because they were betrayed by their own。 The two main characters are Greg, a scientist who’s been studying the Uvovo and their history as well as his best friend and Uvovo scholar, Chel。 We also follow the points of view of Theo, Greg’s uncle who’s a military official who’s tasked with discovering why the Earth was saved last minute by the Sendruka Hegemony shortly after the three ships were sent out into the galaxy。 Robert Horst is an ambassador from Earth sent to Darien, but he’s not alone。 He has an artificial intelligence companion named Harry who helps him construct a simulation of his dead little girl。 Catriona is a biologist who’s been accepted into a forest program to study the Uvovo。 The final character is Kao Chih, a lone human from Tenbrosa, another planet that one of the ships was dispatched to。The world building is very detailed and complex。 The Sendruka Hegemony is a mysterious, powerful government with questionable intent。 Darien is the location of an ancient war that could be coming back to haunt them。 The perpetrators of the invasion years ago, the Swarm, are not to be forgotten。 It was sometimes difficult to keep track of everything because there was so much going on, but I didn’t enjoy the novel any less because of that。 While I’m waiting for the other instalments in the series to arrive, I’ll probably reread this first one, now that I have better understanding of all the players and major conflict。 I’ll most likely pick up on things I didn’t the first time around。 Although the story started slowly, there was some great action in the last third of the novel。 It was a good time。 Like I said before, this was a great start to a series, and I’m very curious to see what happens next。 If you enjoy science fiction or are looking for a good space opera series, you should definitely read this one。 This first instalment was very interesting。 。。。more

Excellent and very solid neo-classical space opera, continuing the tradition of the greats。 No tale of this kind is complete without militaristic elements but there is no glorification of conflict。 Interesting re-imagining of the concept of "hyperspace"。 Some soapboxing on the concepts of "good" and "bad" AI which I'm not sure I agree with, but I'll let it pass as a plot device。 I look forward to the next doorstep-thick volume, "The Orphaned Worlds"。 Excellent and very solid neo-classical space opera, continuing the tradition of the greats。 No tale of this kind is complete without militaristic elements but there is no glorification of conflict。 Interesting re-imagining of the concept of "hyperspace"。 Some soapboxing on the concepts of "good" and "bad" AI which I'm not sure I agree with, but I'll let it pass as a plot device。 I look forward to the next doorstep-thick volume, "The Orphaned Worlds"。 。。。more

Well, that's done。Gosh, I wanted to like this big more。 There was just too much going on without enough tying it together。 I get that this is the first book of a trilogy, but Conley waited far too long to let us in on what was at stake for the characters。 I feel like it needed a much stronger editor before it went out the door。 I have the other two books, but I'm not that excited about reading them。 Well, that's done。Gosh, I wanted to like this big more。 There was just too much going on without enough tying it together。 I get that this is the first book of a trilogy, but Conley waited far too long to let us in on what was at stake for the characters。 I feel like it needed a much stronger editor before it went out the door。 I have the other two books, but I'm not that excited about reading them。 。。。more

An interesting concept somewhat wasted by a dragged out and convoluted plot。 Too many uninteresting and forgettable characters get far too much attention with winding subplots that really take away from the story。 In the end I couldn't tell you one character that stood out or much of what happened through the book outside of the general blurb on the back of the book。 Ultimately disappointing as I have been hunting for a fun adventurous space opera series with lots of alien cultures and a playful An interesting concept somewhat wasted by a dragged out and convoluted plot。 Too many uninteresting and forgettable characters get far too much attention with winding subplots that really take away from the story。 In the end I couldn't tell you one character that stood out or much of what happened through the book outside of the general blurb on the back of the book。 Ultimately disappointing as I have been hunting for a fun adventurous space opera series with lots of alien cultures and a playful pulpy feel。 Sadly, this one didnt work for me and I won't be continuing with the series。 。。。more

This is a space opera in the grand tradition of the genre。 It has multiple worlds, multiple alien civilizations, and a perspective on artificial intelligence and hyperspace which is mysterious and compelling

Good, but took me ages to really get into it。 Partly to do with introducing multiple characters and beings with very awkward names! Also lots of switching between scenes。 But by the end I started to empathise with certain characters。 Interesting sentient beings。

I have mixed feelings about this book, not sure if I like it or not, I like the premise but I feel like there was something missing in its development。 The characters were kinda forgettable and underdeveloped。 It is slow in parts and the good parts are few and far between。 I almost stopped reading several times but managed to push through。 I kinda want to know how it all plays out, but not sure I want to read the next two books。

This book had a very slow start。 I didn’t feel compelled to get back to it, hence the long space between start to finish dates。 As the many characters are established and conflict begins in earnest, I did become more interested。 I enjoyed how the author bounced between characters and viewpoints in his story telling, but I read that some found this annoying。 Although I became more interested in the story as it went all, the characters seem thinly developed to me, and this hurts the reader’s exper This book had a very slow start。 I didn’t feel compelled to get back to it, hence the long space between start to finish dates。 As the many characters are established and conflict begins in earnest, I did become more interested。 I enjoyed how the author bounced between characters and viewpoints in his story telling, but I read that some found this annoying。 Although I became more interested in the story as it went all, the characters seem thinly developed to me, and this hurts the reader’s experience。 。。。more

I used to work at a used bookstore and one of our more well-known customers had a rule: If you're not enjoying a book 50 pages in, stop。 I ignored the rule on this one。Enough has been written in these reviews about how the writing isn't great or how someone saw the Banks blurb and felt hoodwinked, so skipping over that, the big problem with this book is that there is no payoff。 There is no climax to the plot, only slow rising action。 At the end of the book (and this isn't a spoiler because you c I used to work at a used bookstore and one of our more well-known customers had a rule: If you're not enjoying a book 50 pages in, stop。 I ignored the rule on this one。Enough has been written in these reviews about how the writing isn't great or how someone saw the Banks blurb and felt hoodwinked, so skipping over that, the big problem with this book is that there is no payoff。 There is no climax to the plot, only slow rising action。 At the end of the book (and this isn't a spoiler because you can't spoil nothing) the characters haven't really accomplished anything, there is not big revelation about the antagonist, some characters have been off-staged for a while, the reader doesn't get anything new, neither the antagonists or the protagonists win or lose anything that seems meaningful, it's just a plateau in the rising action。It felt like it was there to get to what might happen in a sequel。 But if there isn't a full story in the first book why would I bother? 。。。more
